yourenotimportantEveryone needs to feel important. That’s a basic human need (right after owning a plasma TV). The problem lies with the subset of the population that needs to feel extra important. Maybe they weren’t given enough attention as a kid or maybe they truly believe that continually checking their cell phone will make them more important. No matter what, they end up looking like an idiot. There’s one person that I know that fits this mold but I won’t mention any names. Ron P. Sorry, I figured I’d make him feel more important by mentioning his name if he ever read this.

Almost everything Ron does annoys me to no end. Ron has to feel important. He’ll let you know everything he does and where he goes. “So, uh, I have a meeting I need to be leaving for. I might not be back to the office.” Ok Ron, the whole office is going to the exact same meeting you are. It’s not a big deal. His other hobby is to start impromptu conference calls and when everyone is on the phone he says something like, “I thought there might be some issues we needed to discuss. Anyone have anything to share?” to which everyone just hangs up on the poor guy.

The thing that really makes me step back and laugh is what he did this morning. He returned a call to a client and said, “Sorry I didn’t call you back last week. I was too busy being important.” He doesn’t have time to call that client yet somehow he has enough time to send another client an email, a voice mail at work, a voice mail at home, and my personal favorite, a voice mail on the cellphone that said, “I didn’t know which number was best to reach you so I tried all of them. Call me back at your convenience. Nothing too important, I just wanted to schedule a time to get together.” Sorry Ron, you’re not as important as you think you are.
