What is SEO?

Hundreds of thousands of results will appear before the user on searching for a well known keyword on any search engine. In such a competitive situation, Search Engine Optimization or SEO enables a firm to figure among the top search results for a query relating to a particular word. The reason for the growing popularity of SEO in last few years is that the presence of the website in top search results helps in getting more visitors to it, which very often translates into more business.
SEO can be divided into black hat SEO and white hat SEO. Black hat means use of techniques, which are mostly not approved of, for making a site feature in top results. In contrast, white hat SEO abides by all the principles laid down by the search engines and concentrates on the techniques which are commonly approved of.
The search engines previously matched a webpage with the search for a given word by using Meta data, which is normally embedded in the code of a webpage. But, nowadays, most search engines have employed complicated algorithms which evaluate over two hundred distinct factors to rank search results.
SEO consultants constantly attempt to guess the significance of different factors that play a part in the search algorithms and stay abreast with the changes that search engines make. This information helps them improve upon the SEO techniques for their customers so that they remain competitive for important keywords. When the search results were exclusively reliant on Meta data and the content of the web page, this task involved optimizing the Meta tags of the web pages and ensuring that the keyword density of each page was just appropriate.
In spite of the continued importance of the onsite factors, the search engines now put much more emphasis on how popular a page is. The popularity of a web page is estimated based on how many inbound links it has from other web pages. Each link is therefore taken as a vote for the page and the system becomes democratic in nature. Because of this significant change, SEO now also involves a lot of offsite strategies like distributing free content to get embedded links, and creating an external presence through blogs and other forms of social media.
You should always keep in mind that SEO is a continuous and dynamic process. This field keeps changing and your techniques must be up to date with the changes. That is the reason why it is so important to engage an experienced SEO consultant to assist you.
