Aromatherapy may be something that you’ve heard about but don’t know very much about. You may like to know more about aromatherapy so I’d like to tell you a little of the history and applications for aromatherapy.

The word aromatherapy was 1st coined by chemist in France in’20. It refers to the use of various plant substances and in particular oils which are distilled from plants which are called essential oils. The chemist was called Maurice Gattefosse and it was he who discovered some of the healing quality of essential oils after a fire in his laboratory. At the time of the fire he had lavender oil there as he was studying the use of essential oils in healing.

Following the fire at the laboratory he had burns to his arm so he plunged his arm into the back of lavender oil and found immediate pain relief. He also found the burns healed very fast and without scars will stop

The work of Maurice Gattefosse was followed up by other scientists during the Second World War when many soldiers were burnt and also experienced various other serious wounds. Research was started into the use of natural plant oils called essential oils on burns and also on healing wounds.

In fact aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years under various names. It has always been the art of using various oils from plants and the scents that those oils produced for very pleasant and sometimes healing effects on people with health conditions.

However it is not true that aromatherapy “cure” any disease. However the use of aromatherapy is in helping disease sufferers cope with their various diseases and to improve their mental state. Whilst this is helpful in the overall treatment aromatherapy does not cure illnesses.

However it does seem that using the aromas from essential oils does have a wide range of psychological benefits and this does indeed help sufferers of a wide range of illnesses improve their condition by improving their ability to cope with the disease. Whilst aromatherapy cannot cure a disease it can elevate the mood, reduce psychological symptoms of fear and stress and pain and relax sufferers. All of this helps them deal with the illness.

And it is also possible in some cases that aromatherapy can help reduce a sufferers reliance on prescription drugs such as indigestion tablets, sleeping tablets and painkillers.

Different people have different reactions to the scents from different plant oils. Many people actually utilize the principles of aromatherapy right now without even knowing it. Many, for example, fill out home with various oils and perfumes because they like the smell. They are using the principles of aromatherapy will stop

So if you have a disease that you are confronting, and wondering about the role of aromatherapy, don’t investigate aromatherapy hoping that it will be a magic cure for all your ills. But don’t discount it either, it can do wonders for your moods and for your emotional and mental state, and these can be no less important in some cases. Aromatherapy can, and will often, make a big difference to how your illness, or the cure, progresses.
