Just because something is popular, it doesn’t make it true. People used to think the earth was flat and that Carlos Mencia was funny. On second thought, no one ever thought he was funny. Anyways, people are told that you should “be yourself.” Nothing could be further from the truth. You either play the game or you make pottery and live in poverty.
Sure, maybe two or three weird people will like you and your mom might even think you’re cool but that’s lame. I’m not saying that you should buy the trendy clothes or go tanning. Far from it. What I’m saying is that you have to conform to society more than not if you want to have a good job and relatively smooth sailing through life. There are always exceptions to the rule but this isn’t a magical rainbow world where everyone will accept you no matter what you do. You can’t act out your hobby of pushing people down the stairs, chewing with your mouth open, or wearing neon green spandex to a job interview without repercussions.
Being successful in a lot of aspects is masking who you really are. You have to go to work even if you don’t want to, you can’t tell your boss off, and you can’t be anything you want to be. It’s not as bad as it seems. If you’re lucky you can work 25 years for a company to earn yourself a corner office overlooking the trash dumpster and then you die.
