What You Have To Know About Cleaning A Cutting Board

August 20, 2010 by Peter Calderon

The hygiene of a cutting board should be a concern to all of us. If it is not cleaned thoroughly after each use the germs and bacteria collect on it to be transmitted to the food the next time you use it. If you are purchasing a new one or cleaning the one that you already have then there are things to consider.

A variety of cleaning methods can be used depending on the type of materials that are used to make the board. You have a choice of plastic, glass, acrylics, and different woods. They all have to be properly cleaning in order to avoid any illness. In using different boards for different foods you can certainly avoid the problem of contamination.

It is thought that meat should never be cut on a board. Meat has the highest incidence of tainting your board. Even though you wash it extremely well there is still a chance that there will remain some trace of blood or the raw juice of meat. This can potentially be dangerous. Cut the meat elsewhere and then do not use this surface for anything else unless you use a dishwasher to wash it.

You will be surprised that some of the best cleaning products are things you have in your home. For example if you want to give an extra cleaning to a plastic or wooden board then mix baking soda, salt, and some water and then scrub the board. Afterwards rinse with hot water.

We all have hydrogen peroxide in the house and to clean put some on your board for around ten minutes and then rinse off. Then take distilled vinegar and repeat the process. Another cleaner that will help is bleach. Bleach has so many uses but in this case mix water with it. Use it on a wooden board but do not soak the board. Use a paper towel that is damp and just wipe off before you leave it to dry. Another amazing product used full strength is vinegar. It is a very effective disinfectant.

Occasionally you will find an unpleasant aroma that you would like to remove. Spread sea salt and rub the board with a cut lemon. There are two benefits to using these; there is no longer any smell and those horrible stains are gone.

If you are partial to using essential oils then this is another way to clean a board. Make a spray of lavender essential oil with water in spray bottle. Shake vigorously to mix well. Spray onto the board and there is no need to rinse.

Do not be surprised that soap and water work too. Hot water and soap using a brush so that you can get into the nooks will keep it clean and safe. These are only a few of the choices you have to keep your family safe. Some of these can be done once in a while and others on a regular basis. You also want to keep your board looking fresh, clean, and odorless.

There is no reason why you should not replace a board on a regular basis. If you see the grooves that your knives are making then it may be time for a new purchase. They cannot have a permanent home in your kitchen if you should buy a new one.

Peter Calderon loves collecting the best cutting boards for his cooking. He thinks the best cutting board wood is hard rock maple, preferable built to be edge grain. He reviews many types of cutting boards and writes a blog about how to choose a cutting board.

A Guide To Good Quality Flatware

Our body obtains the nutrients and other essential substances from the food we consume. However, we rarely eat just to feed our body. We eat with our eyes, nose, ears and tongue as well. A good meal is one that not just fills but the stomach but sates our senses as well.

We all started eating with our hands. No other body part served the purpose of taking the food to our mouths as our hands did. Soon, different cultures adopted different eating habits. Some retained use of hands to eat, other came up with chopsticks while some opted for flatware i.e. knives, spoons, and forks etc.

There is a lot of choice as far as knives, spoons, and forks are concerned. For daily use, we prefer plastic or stainless steel products while formal occasions often see our silverware adding to the grandeur of the occasion.

Bad quality flatware looks shabby on our dining table. Further, they often contaminate our food. On the other hand, good quality flatware is quickly complemented for its aesthetics. Further, it ensures our hygienically prepared food does not become dirty even before it enters our body. We often worry about our hands and teeth but ignore the fact that our spoon may spoil our food.

Good flatware can be cleaned in dishwashers. On the other hand poor quality tools often show signs of wear and tear after rigorous cleaning. Why opt for cheap products and waste your valuable time cleaning it again and again after meals.

If you want flatware for your home, then opt for a single piece or a flatware set. Pfaltzgraff stainless flatware is ideal for those who love to see something shiny on the dining table. As compared to plastic, metal flatware has a charm of its own. They last longer and do not break even if they slip out of your hand. Of course, they are heavier than plastic flatware but that is a small price to pay for the feeling of royalty we experience when we use such flatware. The best deals for quality products can be found online without any difficulty.

Does not your family deserve the best? Choose quality flatware over cheap and poorly made flatware. Why be stingy when the health of your family is at stake?

Dinner Decoration Tips

There is no telling when dinner customs appeared, but they are around for quite some time. Starting from the ancient Egyptians until today, a dinner gathering will always be accompanied by certain environmental and decorative touches. Today, the dinner flatware is an important part of each home, and it is the only thing that can shine a favorable light on your cooked dishes.

Firstly, the way our dining table looks when the entire family gathers after a long and hard workday is an important factor in family welfare. It has been proven that better home atmosphere can improve and maintain any relationship, and since we have to make use of these things anyway, there is no reason not to choose them according to our taste. Wallace flatware designs and innovations are a good reason to start considering them for your next kitchen accessory.

An over accessorized meal can turn eyes from the food itself to dishes present on the table. You should always keep the focus on your cooking, as it is the most important part of any meal, and not on the dishes it’s placed in. This is why you should try to choose a kitchen set that is elegant enough, without being too striking.

When you choose you new dinner accessories, make sure you choose models than can last in time. There is no point in buying something that looks pretty and is cheap, but will be ruined after a couple of uses. Even if quality flatware is a bit more expensive, these are money that will be well spent.

Improving your home environment must be started with changing any old kitchen accessories. It doesn’t help to have new furniture, a new stove or refrigerator, if you are still using the same old and degraded flatware sets inherited from your parents. They are a business card for each home holder, they tell the world how much you care about your house and family. And you will have to face them everyday, no matter what you do.

Ginger Sugarsnaps – Family Tradition

August 6, 2010 by James Cameroone

Ginger Sugarsnaps are a long standing family recipe. My 97-year old grandma Ginger recently died in a tragic hang-gliding accident. She hang-glided into the mouth of an active volcano somewhere near Fiji. Just before the hot liquid magma consumed her she succumbed to lymphoma.

Don’t cry for grandma, please. She was lucky enough to have died doing what she loved. For nearly 80 years my feisty grandma Ginger would hang glide over destitute sections of America’s inner cities and shower them with her internationally famous sugar snap cookies. If you live in a poor urban area of the United States you likely know the distinct graupel-like sound of grandma Ginger’s cookie storms well. That’s why by 1960 people from areas of intense urban decay began to call these sugar snap cookies “sweet boom booms .”

As I was far and away her favorite grandchild, granny took favor upon me and bequeathed me her sugar snap recipe which I share with you now. You might ask why would I share this prized and closely-guarded family recipe? Two Reasons: 1.) The slums and ghetto’s of the world will crumble without grandma Ginger’s scrumptious sugar snaps; and 2.) I was born without appendages and though I have tried several times I have found that my condition prevents me from hang-gliding. Since I can’t hang-glide, I can not continue grandma Ginger’s seven decade tradition of gentrification via inner city cookie showers….So…if you can bake and you can hang-glide, I implore you to take this below and carry on the cookie shower tradition.

Yield 5-6 dozen Ingredients: 1 and 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour 1/2 cup cornmeal 1 tablespoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup shortening 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup white sugar 1 egg 1/4 cup dark molasses 1/3 cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon ground allspice Chiffonade of 2 skins of extra-crispy fried chicken

Directions: Heat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Stir flour, ginger, baking soda, allspice, and salt into a mixing bowl. Stir the mixture to blend evenly then sift a second time into another bowl. Place the shortening into a mixing bowl and beat until creamy. Gradually beat in half the white sugar. Beat in the egg, and dark molasses. Sift 1/3 of the flour mixture into the shortening mixture; stir to thoroughly blend. Sift in the remaining flour mixture. Remove the extra-crispy skins from 2 fried chicken breasts (Note: do not use Popeyes Spicy Fried Chicken) and proceed to chiffonade. Add the chicken skin to the bowl with the other ingredients. Mix together until a soft dough forms. Pinch off small amounts of dough and roll into 1 inch diameter balls between your hands. Roll each ball in a mix of the sugar, and place 1 and 1/2 inches apart on an baking sheet lined with a silicone mat.

Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees Celsius) until the tops are rounded and slightly cracked, about 11 minutes. Cool cookies on a wire rack. Store in an air tight container until you are ready to shower America’s ghettos with these Ginger Sugarsnaps.

Grind And Brew Coffee Makers, You Won’t Need The Coffee House Anymore

August 2, 2010 by Sue Ann Nivens

Are you tired of shelling out $5-$7 every morning for the teenager at the local coffee house to hand you a cup of fresh testing coffee? Do you know what the difference between your coffee at home and there is? Here a secret, it’s the same beans, the same roasting process and the same brewing. They have the same water, the same sugar and the same creamer that you do at home. In fact there really is no difference between the two except one. They grind there coffee fresh when your order it. That’s right, that’s the big difference, they grind the beans right then when you place your order. So why not just run out and get a grinder? You could but there is a better option and that is to get a grind and brew coffee maker. There are a few key reasons why you would want to have a grind and brew machine like the ones in the coffee houses instead of just a regular coffee pot and a separate grinder. Let’s look at those reasons

First let’s get one thing straight not all coffee makers are created equal and with the different style of coffee makers you will have those people who will jump up and down that their favorite is the best style to provide the best cup of coffee possible. Grind and brew machines are available in all the major styles of coffee machine to meet the needs of every highly opinionated coffee drinker.

What exactly is dead coffee you might ask and why does it make a difference to your cup? Simply put when coffee is ground it starts immediately to undergo a chemical change. This change is simple enough to understand. What makes coffee become coffee is the releasing of oils and other substances into the water that flows over the grounds. These oils are the main flavor releasers. There are a lot of different oils in coffee and they all undergo changes in different ways but the most important ones change quickly from a substance that is easily able to be involved in the brewing process to a waxy substance that is very difficult to melt under normal brewing methods. This change happens in as little as 12 hours and after those oils are out of the picture you have a coffee brew that has lost up to 80% of its total flavor, i.e. “Dead” coffee. A grind and brew machine can help you cure your life of dead coffee by letting you have grounds that are being brewed only minutes after they are created from the beans. This is why coffee house coffee is so good, it has nothing to do with the little goddess on the logo blessing the beans or the “fresh mountain water” (out of the regular city supply you use) that gave life to the giant moose on the wall before it was stuffed. It also has nothing to do with the “skill” of the 17 year old behind the counter who last week was asking if you wanted fries with that at the place across the street. It has to do with the fact that they are serving “live” coffee; In other words, fresh ground and immediately brewed with all the oils intact.

So why not just buy a coffee? Most of the coffee grinders that are on the market today have weak motors that over heat and strip out within a few months’ time. They are very small in size and thus cannot handle the large volume of making more than a couple of cups. This makes them useless for heavy drinker or large groups drinking the brew. They also have no finite control for the grind in most cases just a simple on and off function. On the other hand a grind and brew machine has the capability to have a much bigger and significantly more powerful motor. The grind is able to be adjusted to a wide range of pre-set grinds that are most popular in the US and Canada, and they can have a personal preference grind set. They also have the capacity to handle enough whole raw beans to accommodate the full serving capacity of the machine in one grind cycle.

They also offer the advantage of being able to utilize the machines set it and forget it features to enable automatic brewing of the coffee as well as grinding the beans this is very important since most people complain that in order to take advantage of their coffee machines automatic features they have to sacrifice some of the quality of their fresh ground coffee by grinding it the night before. This allows the beans to “dry out” as mentioned earlier and lose their flavor. Having a grind and brew machine eliminates this problem.

It doesn’t matter what kind of coffee fan you are, there is a grand and brew machine that will fit your needs. These machines can provide you with a great coffee experience and are available in all sizes and styles. You can also find a design and style of coffee make to fit the design of your home.

Most of the popular design styles are based on a black and chrome theme there can be found are a large variety of other colors and styles. Some manufacturers are producing coffee makers in a wide array of vibrant colors. The styling ranging from commercial designs to retro styles and artistic contemporary designs.

Some of the most popular brands of grind and brew machines are Cuisinart, DeLonghi, Krups, Bosh, Jura Capresso. These top manufacturers are making grind and brews in a large selection of models and abroad range of features. They can be had in prices ranging from $99-$300 depending on what you are wanting out of the machine.

Grind and brew coffee makers allow you to combine the great taste of fresh ground coffee with the convenience and simplicity of an automatic machine. You can get very basic models which do little more than grind and then brew or you can get professional grade caf models which do it all and then some. They bring a new level of enjoyment to the lives of the true coffee lover.

You want to look for an oil finish if you are going to be slicing fruits, vegetables and meats on the surface. Choose a wood that is an excellent work surface for food preparation like Maple, which is a closed-pore/tight grained and obviously organic material. How A Septic Tank Site Evaluation Is Performed

July 25, 2010 by Adrianna Noton

When a property for either a home or commercial building is evaluated for a septic tank installation, the inspector is checking to see if the site is suitable for onsite waste water treatment. An evaluation is very important because it helps protect homeowners from incurring costs in the future if there is a problem due to the location of the septic tank, and it protects the public and environment by ensuring the waste water will be disposed of and returned to the water table in a clean and healthy manner. Below is a general guide on how a septic tank site evaluation is performed:

1. A professional certified to evaluate septic sites will come to the property to do the septic site evaluation. The professional assesses the near by water sources and environmental considerations to make sure there is no health or safety hazard if the septic tank is installed. For instance, the inspector does not want waste water flowing into a creek or into a well.

2. Once the site area has been assessed, the inspector will assess the various levels of soil up to five feet into the ground. The homeowner will have hired an excavator to come out and dig a pit prior to the evaluation. The inspector will assess whether the soil conditions will support a septic tank. The soil assessment will look at such qualities as “soil texture” and “soil structure.” The inspector will determine if the soil will allow for a large enough drain-field for the water that will be returned to the ground after being treated in the septic tank.

3. A soil percolation test, or PERC test, will be performed to determine the rate in which soil absorbs a specific volume of water. This is done to make sure the soil is appropriate for a soak-away, and to make sure that the soak-away is designed correctly. It will also indicate the size of the septic system to be used and how it will be designed. To perform a percolation test, a set of holes are dug 300mm square and 300mm below the proposed outlet from the septic tanks or sewage treatment plant. The sides of the holes are mixed before the holes are pre-soaked. A controlled amount of water is poured in the hole and the test reading is based on how long it takes the soil to absorb the water added to the hole. A percolation test is considered to have failed if the results are fewer than 12 or over 100 seconds/mm drop. As well, a percolation test should not be carried out during bad weather, and if it is performed during the summer, then the number of times performing the test should be increased depending on the recent weather.

4. Once approved, that is, the results show proper adsorption, the septic marking points will be added to a survey to show where the septic tank will be located, As well, the area chosen will be free of trees and tree roots, underground cables, and away from buildings, property lines, or water sources such as creeks.

Septic tanks are required for any business or home. A Septic Tank Site Evaluation is mandatory to ensure the safety of the public and the environment. By understanding what the inspection involves, a homeowner can better prepare and budget for the expense.

Septic tank system can be environmentally friendly, effective and economical. FAST biological septic systems replace septic tanks and sewer lines. FAST wastewater treatment neutralizes septic sewage, grease trap interceptors, consuming contaminants, releasing just air and clear, odorless water.

A Sensible Breakfast : Not An Impossible Mission

It’s a hackneyed but true desist that breakfast is the most imperative meal of the day. For many of us, it’s been about twelve hours since our last meal and our bodies need a good refueling. We are too tied up. We hate breakfast foods. We are not hungry. We are trying to shed kilos. Unhappy to assert, none of those reasons are valid. Attempting to shed kilos is the worst excuse of all. So how does one get the spellbinding mixture of the right nutriments that can give you energy and send you healthfully into your day? It is not that hard, actually .

Take care when you get a smoothie at a store as some can have as much as 600 calories. You can buy a good blender or smoothie maker to have at home and whip up your own smoothie in less time than it takes to stop at a smoothie store, and you’ll know precisely what’s in it. * For an even quicker breakfast, try making some breakfast burritos and keeping them in the refrigerator. You will use regular or whole-wheat tortillas, scrambled eggs ( either full, all whites, a mix, or an egg product, some vegatables like peppers and onions, and soy sausage.

Pull one out, and while you’re pouring your coffee, it can be heating in the microwave.

Add a banana or apple for on-the-go dining. Consider adding some banana or blueberries on top of a waffle. Breakfast may be the best meal to fill up without a large amount of calories or fat.

Cuisinart Shmeezenart – Cost Effective Coffee Maker Alert!

July 21, 2010 by James Cameroone

My wife and I bought this Pacific Digital coffeemaker to replace a Cuisinart that was no longer available and we’re glad we did. We grind our own coffee from freshly roasted beans and drink it black, so we care a lot about flavor. We don’t like reheating coffee, even in the microwave.

We wanted a 10-cup coffee model, since we typically make about 8 cups of regular-decaf blend in the morning for our own enjoyment, and we figured the coffee would remain hotter for longer in a smaller carafe. This coffee maker does a much better job of retaining heat than our 6-cup Krups did. We have found that even a cup or less left in the container has been drinkable and hot after a few hours. We’ve never tried coffee from the highly regarded Braun so we can’t say this is the best brew ever, but we’re more than happy with what we’ve got.

The Pacific Digital coffeemaker is a fully automatic 10-cup coffeemaker with 24-hour programmability. It has a 1- to 4-cup setting for brewing a smaller amount without compromising any flavor. There is a brew-pause function, which I really enjoy, with auto shutoff at the end of the brewing cycle. Also note the double-wall insulated thermal carafe, charcoal water filter, and gold-tone filter included.

The machine is pretty compact for a coffee maker, measuring at approximately 8 by 9 by 13 inches. The four year limited warranty was a great guarantee. I’ve had this for three years now and I’ve never even had an issue with it to even worry about the warranty.

What makes this coffee maker better than all the rest is the clean taste it adds to my coffee. I know it sounds ridiculous, but this maker definitely enriches the coffee beans in a way that no other machine has yet to achieve. I look forward to waking up in the morning and having my coffee already pre-brewed. It’s also a good-looking appliance, and it’s fun to show off to friends!

Nothing is more American than drinking coffee while wearing stonewashed jeans!
