Mesothelioma: The Basics
September 1, 2010 by Greg. Gardner
Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that is usually found in those previously exposed to asbestos. Cancerous cells form in the mesothelium, which is a protective lining that covers most of the body’s internal organs. These cells typically form in the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or the sac that encircles the heart.
The average life span of a person diagnosed with the disease is about 4 to 24 months from the finding. About 3,000 people in the U.S. die of mesothelioma every year. People at risk are those who have been previously exposed to asbestos dust, including former steel workers, auto mechanics, mineworkers, and military workers, among many others. Their family members may also be at risk, as the asbestos dust from clothing can travel through the air.
Mesothelioma has an extremely long latency period, which means that symptoms of the disease may not emerge until 30 to 50 years after the initial exposure to asbestos. Pleural mesothelioma, which is the most common type and affects the area around the lungs, may cause shortness of breath, chest pains, and a persistent cough, which may lead to coughing up blood. These symptoms are caused by the build up of fluid between the lining of the lung and the chest cavity. The disease may start in the chest area and spread to other areas of the body. Other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include weight loss, severe breathing trouble, fever, difficulty swallowing, and swelling of the face and neck areas. It should be noted that some people with the disease do not experience any serious symptoms at all.
Peritoneal mesothelioma is rarer than pleural mesothelioma, and affects the abdominal area. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include abdominal swelling and pain due to the build up of fluid in the abdominal cavity, nausea, loss of appetite, and vomiting. Breathing complications and chest pains may also be present, as well as bowel obstruction, anaemia, fever, and blood clotting.
The rarest form of the disease is pericardial mesothelioma, which first forms in the area surrounding the heart. Tumors grow in the tissues around the heart and spread from there. Chest pain, shortness of breath, constant coughing, and shivering may be symptoms of this form of mesothelioma.
Diagnosis of the disease is oftentimes difficult, due to the fact that the symptoms associated with mesothelioma are similar to those of other conditions. The symptoms of the disease become more serious as the cancerous tumors enter the later stages of development, so people who have been exposed to asbestos at any time in their lives should contact their doctor immediately. Even if a person has never been exposed directly to asbestos but is experiencing any of the above symptoms, they should inform their doctor as soon as possible, as asbestos dust and fibres may have traveled through the air from items such as clothing.
People who have been diagnosed with any form of mesothelioma should immediately contact a lawyer. Individual states have their own statutes of limitation, meaning that there is a set time limit regarding how long a patient has to act on their diagnosis. When searching for a lawyer to handle your case, be sure to find one that has prior experience with mesothelioma cases. They will have the contacts and resources to take care of your case in a timely manner. The Internet is a helpful and efficient resource for a mesothelioma lawyer search.
Patients do not have to be concerned with paying lawyers up-front, since the majority of mesothelioma lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, which means that they will not request payment of any kind unless they successfully settle your case. Lawyers will usually take a 35% cut of whatever settlement or reward the patient receives, but patients seeking compensation for their disease have nothing to lose and everything to gain in going to a lawyer for help.
The average mesothelioma-related settlement in the U.S. is $1 million. Cases that go to trial average awards of approximately $6 million, according to the RAND Corporation. A bill called the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act of 2005 (FAIR Act of 2005) introduced on March 17, 2005, seeks to create set amounts of compensation for mesothelioma victims, which would depend on their symptoms.
People who have mesothelioma are able to seek large compensation amounts because their disease is a result of a company’s decision not to take sufficient measures to protect its workers from breathing in asbestos while on the job.

Mesothelioma – History, Hazards And Dietary Advice

History of asbestos.
There are four main types of asbestos; Amosite (brown fibers), Anthophyllite (gray fibers), white Christie, and blue Crocidolite. Chrysotile has curly fibers while the other three have rod like fibers. These fibers fragment into dust quite readily and waft into the air. They can adhere to skin or clothing and are easily swallowed or inhaled.
Half a century ago, asbestos was hailed by many as a miracle product. They said nearly anything could be made from this mineral. It as used as an additive to reinforce mortar and plastics. Asbestos fibers can also be separated into fine threads that do not conduct electricity and are unaffected by heat or chemicals.
Use of asbestos drastically increased during World War II. Shipbuilding incorporated asbestos extensively in freighters and support vessels to insulate boilers, steam pipes and hot water pipes. Asbestos became the miracle construction material as it was readily obtained, processed, and transported. After WWII cars used asbestos in brake shoes and clutch pads. Asbestos found its way into residential and industrial building materials, water supply, sewage materials, ceiling and floor tiles, and vermiculite garden materials to name a few products.
In the 1970’s, following the discoveries of the health dangers of asbestos dust inhalation, the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission prohibited the use of asbestos in several products that could liberate asbestos fibers into the environment during use. Regulations governing the use of asbestos and public concern since 1970 have created a significant drop in the use of asbestos in the United States. The same pattern has been seen in most of the developed world.
In 1989 all new uses of asbestos were banned by the Environmental Protection Agency while any old uses before that year were still allowed. The EPA suggested that schools inspect for damaged asbestos and eliminate any exposure or enclose it in protective barriers. Vermiculite, widely used in horticulture, became a concern of the EPA . They recommended outdoor use, limiting the amount of dust used, and keeping vermiculite damp.
Health hazards
Asbestos may create serious health hazards such as coughing, lung damage, shortness of breath, and lung cancer. Most people do not become sick in the early stages of contact but usually need continued exposure. This often means on jobs such as mining, milling, manufacturing asbestos products, and the building construction industry. Firemen, demolition and destruction workers, drywall removers, and anyone else involved in trades that involve destruction of buildings, ships, and automobiles are also exposed to the hazards of asbestos.
Over a number of years continual exposure to asbestos can cause very serious health problems, such as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare type of carcinoma of the membrane that lines numerous cavities of the body, including the lungs, abdomen and heart, and has been associated with exposure to asbestos dust. In mesothelioma, the cells of the mesothelioma metastasize and damage adjacent organs and tissues.
Mesothelioma may not develop for a long period of time, often as long as twenty-five or thirty-five years before full blown symptoms appear. Not all workers who have been exposed will develop diseases, but workers who have been exposed to it may bring fibers on their clothing, hair, shoes, and skin home to their families. To circumvent this risk, most industries require workers to bathe and change their clothing before they leave work.
Dietary advice for Mesothelioma patients
Doctors and nutritionists may recommend a special cancer diet because many mesothelioma patients tend to lose their appetites due to worry over their condition. Also, those who are undergoing treatment may choose not to eat because of the unpleasant side effects they may experience. Chemotherapy and some medications may cause an imbalance of nutrients that must be corrected in order to keep the body as strong as possible and to keep the patient from losing an excessive amount of weight. Other side effects of mesothelioma treatment can include nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth and a change in the sense of smell or taste.
In our childhood we were all told to eat our vegetables. Forcing down cabbage and sprouts was supposed to make us bigger and stronger. Well, so it is for mesothelioma patients. Diet is often an overlooked subject for cancer patients, but eating the right nutritional foods for strength and energy is just as important as taking the proper medication.
Mesothelioma patients undergoing treatment must follow a special cancer diet devised by their nutritionists. The details of every patient’s mesothelioma diet will vary. Some patients will need to incorporate more fat into their diets, while others may need more protein. Cancer diets involve eating the correct amounts of protein and calories as well as drinking the right amount of water to keep the ailing body replenished and energized. The body needs plenty of nourishment when it is going through chemotherapy or even when the patient is taking certain medications.
It is important that patients devise a cancer diet under the guidance of their doctor and nutritionist to ensure that they obtain the proper amount of nutrients to improve their quality of life.
Protein is important for any cancer patient because it helps repair tissue damaged by surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. Protein also helps maintain a strong and healthy immune system, lowering a mesothelioma patient’s risk of infection after aggressive cancer treatments. The National Cancer Institute recommends increasing protein in a cancer diet with cheese, milk, ice cream, yoghurt, eggs, nuts, peanut butter, meats and fish.
Fats are an essential part of the cancer diet because they supply the body with the necessary energy it needs while undergoing treatment. The amount of fats a cancer diet should consist of is dependent on a mesothelioma patient’s age and body size. The National Cancer Institute recommends increasing caloric intake with such foods as butter, milk, cheese, honey, sugar, granola and dried fruits.
Water is another essential component of the cancer diet. Without a significant amount of water, the body will dehydrate. It is important that anyone undergoing cancer treatment drink sufficient water to keep their bodies hydrated and replenished.

Mesothelioma: Your Health In Jeopardy

Are you at risk of Mesothelioma?
If you’re above 40 and have ever been exposed to asbestos continuously for more than 2 months in past 15-40 years, and then you are at risk of Mesothelioma. It’s a rare however deadly cancer of membrane cells, which covers some vital parts of our body like lungs, abdominal cavity and heart, called mesothelium. Like in other cancers, in mesothelioma the membrane cells divide ruthlessly causing abnormal growth, which ultimately damage the lining of vital organ like lungs and abdomen.
Causes of Mesothelioma
Asbestos a mineral, used in different processes including building, shipyard and manufacturing during the days of World War II and for a few more decades, is the main cause of Mesothelioma.
Researches have proved that those who have worked in asbestos related industries are mostly at risk of Mesothelioma. The minute asbestos particles go into human body through nose or mouth during inhalation, talking or all other reason. They reach lungs or abdomen and damage the lining, causing Mesothelioma. Due to its long latency period, mesothelioma can attack you even 15 – 40 years after the inhalation of asbestos particles. Even the family members of person working in asbestos related industries may be vulnerable to mesothelioma.
Treatments for Mesothelioma
Due to the fact that Mesothelioma is a newly found disease, many doctors might not be able to diagnose it. However, when you have a known history of asbestos exposure you should ask your doctor to look for the symptoms of this disease.
The good news is that there is a treatment for mesothelioma in the early stages. Quite a few treatment options for mesothelioma cancers are surgical removal of the effected tissues; chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Nevertheless, the prognosis of later stage mesothelioma patients is bleak and the average survival time after diagnosis is 12-24 months.
Mesothelioma Compensations
The owners of Asbestos related industries were quite aware of the health hazards of asbestos. Nonetheless, they persisted with its use without issuing any warnings or taking steps for avoiding the health hazards. This is the reason why US courts have awarded huge sums as compensations to the Mesothelioma patients/families by the companies/persons responsible for causing asbestos exposure.

Mesothelioma: A Deadly Lung Cancer
August 31, 2010 by Greg. Gardner
Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer of the lungs and the abdominal cavities. Unlike other diseases, the cause of mesothelioma is not natural. In most of the cases, it is a cancer of lungs inflicted on the human beings by the modern economic factors, which are also credited to bring prosperity to the corporate world.
The disease has left many dead and many more fighting for the failing health. The common symptoms related to the disease are breathlessness, dry cough and pain in the respiratory tracts followed by vomiting. The prime Cause of mesothelioma is the exposure to asbestos.
Asbestos is a natural fibrous material that was widely used in various industries and building materials because of its stability and heat resistant properties. However, asbestos is also a deadly contaminant and responsible for serious diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma cancers and lung cancer. Most of the diseases are caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers that could settle in the internal body organs and cause serious diseases.
Mesothelioma and other asbestos related diseases can lie dormant in the body for decades before diagnosis. The worst part is that after diagnosis the patient has hardly any left for fighting these diseases.
Asbestos has extensively been mined in South Africa and exported to UK & US factories for reprocessing. For many years, the industrialists enjoyed the benefits of asbestos as a cheap substitute to wood in Building Material Industry and an integral part of Brake Lining material used extensively in vehicles during the World Wars. Asbestos was also widely used as an Insulation material in the buildings and industries in the US and Europe.
The victims of mesothelioma can file lawsuits for seeking compensation against the companies responsible for asbestos exposure. They can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of income, lost earning capacity, pain and sufferings. The family members and relatives of the people who die because of mesothelioma cancers can also file lawsuits for compensation to recover the loss of consortium care. A dozen of companies who made an exit from the business decades ago are still fighting the huge compensation bills pending against them for causing a major biological disorder. The courts have ordered huge amounts as compensation in most of the mesothelioma lawsuits.

Factors Responsible For Celiac Disease
August 30, 2010 by Conlisk Diso
There are many causes of celiac disease that force the patients to have gluten free diet. The reasons of celiac disease is the reaction that takes place between the immune system of body and villi (millions of lined up fingers like projections) which interferes with the body’s power of absorbing vital nutrients and minerals. This forces the patients to avoid the intake of gluten as they may face severe repercussions because of them. Severe diarrhea is the disease celiac patients suffer from due to the intake of gluten which is found in wheat, rye and barley.
The main cause of celiac disease is the obliteration of the inside layer of the small intestine. This destruction is caused due to the immunological reaction of gluten in diet resulting in the inflammation and destruction the inner lining of the small intestine. Researches have shown that this reaction is because of various genes inherited from parents by children.
Proteins are made up of extended manacles of amino acids, about hundreds close to each other. During the process of digestion, various enzymes act upon the food within small intestine and break the proteins into solitary amino acids and much smaller units. This is due to the fact that our stomach has the potential of digesting small amino acids chains. But sometimes, the food is not totally broken down and many bigger manacles of amino acids go in the cells lined up in the intestine. Long manacles of amino acids are many times toxic and damage the intestinal cells. As a result of this, tissue transglutaminase takes place.
Barley and rye are rich in gluten similar to proteins and can result in celiac disease in one’s body which is then transformed to other generations. However, consumption of rice and corn is not considered as the cause of celiac disease. No definite cause of celiac disease has been discovered up till now but hereditary problems are held responsible for the whole process. If your parents or parent is suffering from this disease, it is likely that you are going to suffer from it.
Celiac disease can be distinguished through gastrointestinal problems. Diarrhea, malodorous flatulence, abdominal bloating and increased amounts of fat in the stool are some of the signs which when seen in someone’s body, should consult the doctor. One should consult the doctor immediately to avoid any serious problems. Curbing this disease at its roots avoids serious complications and if controlled you may be allow having some rich diet.

Living In Fear Of Mesothelioma
August 29, 2010 by Greg. Gardner

First of all, you may be wondering what mesothelioma is, and why I should be scared of it ?…..
Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is the medical name for cancer of the lung, and is usually caused by exposure to asbestos. Symptoms my not appear for up to 50 years or so after exposure to asbestos, and people who haven’t had any contact with asbestos for many years, are now showing signs of having this deadly disease. The symptoms are usually shortness of breath, coughing, and chest pains and feeling very tired.
Why should I be scared of it ?
As a small child, I used to live near a factory which used asbestos to make fire-proof products and other insulating materials for the building industry. I believe that asbestos was also used in the manufacture of break linings. I can remember seeing the asbestos dust that spewed out of the factory covering the surrounding area (including part of our school playground) with this deadly snow like powder. Of course, as we were just kids at that time, we had absolutely no idea just how deadly this dust was. We even played in it completely unaware of its dangers.
The Horror Came Later.
It wasn’t until years later after the factory had been closed down, that we began to see the full horrors of this white snow looking powder, we had played with as children. By this time I was much older, and the dangers of asbestos had been given massive coverage by the media, so I was now aware of what could happen to myself and hundreds of other people who lived in the same area as this factory in years to come.
TV Documentary.
This factory received national television coverage, and on one program they interviewed families who had suffered due to the problem of asbestos. I was shocked to see that I knew some of the people who had lost family members due to developing mesothelioma, in fact I actually went to school with some of the people who took part in the program. The program showed old photographs of the area around the factory (including my old school) covered in powder, and it really did look like it had been snowing. When you see all of this on television it really does make you just a little bit worried, especially when you have been in contact with asbestos like I have.
Treatments.
If mesothelioma is diagnosed early enough, a cure is possible with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. However, in the case of a more advanced illness a cure is not possible, but with the right treatments the illness can be slowed down dramatically and medication can be used to ease any pain.
X-Rays.
As a precaution I did have x-rays a few years ago just to put my mind at rest, and thankfully they were all clear. The doctor recommended that I should have x-rays on a very regular basis just to be on the safe side. So, at the moment everything is ok, but I will always be just a little bit worried of what might happen in the future.

Healthy Blood Pressure Reduction: 5 Things You Must Know About Prescription Medication.
August 9, 2010 by Hanna B Prestson
Healthy blood pressure reduction is when you can treat your hypertension by natural means. By practicing healthy blood pressure reduction without prescription medication you will avoid the risks and side-effects that come with prescription Medication.
I agree that these medications are necessary for some, but not for all and not for everyone who is currently taking them. Don’t just blindly let your Doctor put you on medication for the rest of your life. Think about this: isn’t the idea behind medicine to make you better, that is cure you of your disease? But that is not what hypertension medication does. It merely disguises your symptoms.
The most common hypertension medications are Alpha Blockers, Beta-Blockers, Angiotensin Receptor Blockers, ACE Inhibitors, Calcium Channels Blockers, diuretics, Clonidine and Minoxidil. These drugs are prescribed to you for high blood pressure but look what they do:
Beta-Blockers suppress nerve function to the heart and blood vessels to slow the heart, Diuretics remove water and sodium chloride (salt) from the body, Clonidine affects the whole central nervous system in the brain to chemically relax the body.
Minoxidil is reserved for people who don’t respond to the other drugs, it has to be combined with a Beta-Blocker or Clonidine and a diuretic to prevent your body from swelling up like a balloon.
Does this stuff sound like something you want to pump into your body without question for years and years? And I haven’t even mentioned the side-effects. They are positively frightening!
You can get clinical depression, heart failure, nausea, diarrhea, increased heart rate, hypotension (low BP), become dizzy, bronchospasm, dyspnea, Raynaud’s Syndrome, hallucinations, sexual dysfunction and the list goes on.
Because I have lost family members to this disease, I’m passionate about healthy blood pressure reduction. I believe in education and hope that you too will benefit from the information I’m sharing to achieve healthy blood pressure reduction for yourself.
My mother and sister have both used Beta-Blockers to control blood pressure for many years, and they have now started to make some serious changes in their lives. My sister used to register 140/90 and tonight she reported 112/65.

A Few Suggestions On How To Treat Eczema
August 1, 2010 by Becca G Taylor
Eczema can be treated, but before we start discussing the various methods you have to understand that it is a condition where the skin of the sufferer goes very dry and flaky. It is very common in young children. There are varying degrees of severity of this condition but there is one blessing, it is not contagious.
When you suffer from it, your skin will look red but also be extremely itchy. In severe cases, the skin may bleed or start weeping.
The first thing you do when starting to treat this skin condition is to make an effort to stop it getting any worse. And the best way to do this is to stop scratching it. To help you with this it is best to apply creams and ointments to the affected areas. These will help to keep the skin moist. The best time to apply them to the skin is after bathing so the moisture from the bath is still locked into the skin.
A further option is to apply a cold compress to the affected area. If you still are not having any success then go to the local drug store and get some corticosteroid creams, these are designed to reduce any inflammation. If these do not work, then it’s time to visit your doctor and use whatever they prescribe. You should be aware that there could be some side effects and in order to prevent these you must limit the treatment time and the places where they are applied.
All the creams and lotions will have no effect at all if the itching is very severe. In situations like these you must visit your doctor. They will then prescribe you with an antihistamine combined with a mild sedative. A feeling of drowsiness is a common side effect of this type of drug, so the best time to take them is in the evening and then they will help you sleep better.
For those who want to try another method to treat the condition there are tar treatments and photo-therapy. There is only one problem with using tar treatment and that is it is extremely messy. If you feel that nothing will ever help you then as a last resort you could try a drug called cyclosporine A. This will modify the body’s immune response system but you have to be aware that it is known to have some serious side effects.
Those who suffer from atopic dermatitis, another form of skin condition, there are two topical medications from which to choose, and both have been approved by the FDA. They are namely tacrolimus and pimecrolimus. They belong to a class of drugs called calcineurin inhibitors. These work by modulating the immune response, but they have no long term side effects.
The pain and irritation of the skin condition known as eczema can be alleviated by eczema cream. Eczema creams soothe the itching and burning and assist in preventing infections and scarring.
Shingles On Face – An Introduction
July 21, 2010 by Sleat Gurion
Shingles is also known as herpes zoster, it is a resurfacing of the chicken pox virus that had remained in the body after you had chicken pox during your childhood. It can start on any part of the body, in a small area. It starts on one portion of the body in the form of rash. The disease may start anywhere on the body, but eventually it reaches the face and when you have shingles on face, it really is very painful. When it starts on the face initially, some suppose it to be a bug bite.
The sensation starts as itching with burning on the lower part of the face. This may be a reoccurrence of the chicken pox virus, but it is worse than that. The whole body aches and there is weakness all over, the patient is tired all the time and the feeling of nausea is just horrible.
The reason shingles on face is so painful is that the nerve system is affected by this disease. It starts at the spinal area and slowly makes way towards your face. When it reaches your face it is an indication that the disease is at a serious juncture. Consulting a doctor is the only way you can get relief from this pain. Often people mistake the disease for something else. Here are the symptoms that should indicate that you have Shingles on face.
Early Symptoms
There will be rash on the patient’s face with high temperature on the body followed by stomach upset, fever, chills, headache and fatigue. If such symptoms are ever notices and the patient feel a tingling sensation with a rash, consult a doctor. Remember all the sensation should be there for shingles.
Pain You must have felt pain when you had chicken pox at a younger age; but the pain of shingles is more intense. You will start feeling a tingling sensation which gradually turns into a persisting pain that goes on for a long time. If the trigeminal nerve is affected then you can expect the pain to prolong even after the rashes have healed.
Eyes Singles on face can affect the eyes also. The situation is known as zoster keratitis in medical terms. Now this is really a very serious condition that can lead to blindness. Therefore when you start feeling a tingling sensation on the face you should visit a doctor immediately.
Rash
Shingles on face will appear as red bumps with swollen skin. They will blister in a few days and then dry up. When the shingles on face appear it is not painful but your start feeling pain when the healing process starts.
Nerve
Shingles on face means on a single side of your face you will see a red band which will tingle. But soon the tingling sensation turns into severe pain as virus reaches the nerve ends of the face. Therefore when ever you have the symptoms mentioned above, do not waste time in trying to guess what it is, just rush to the doctor immediately.

Migraines, Headache Or Sinus Problems – Which Have You Got?
February 18, 2010 by Kylie Johnson
The differences between suffering a migraine and suffering from sinus problems may seem to be minute, to the point that its very difficult to tell which is which and what you are actually suffering from. In actuality there are a number of clear pointers which make it fairly obvious on the whole if its a migraine or if its sinuses. Lets have a look now at which is which.
Migraines will often pound on and off in your head where sinus problems are constant – the pressure is a constant pressure. With sinus issues nausea does not often appear but with a migraine its relatively common. Migraines also can be down to a genetic disposition whereas sinus is not.
They can be pounding in nature and cause a distortion of vision, even some are not able to speak with the onset of a really bad migraine. Interestingly, the author of Alice in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll, during a really bad migraine saw the characters of the story.
Migraines are very often one-sided. They can be induced by a change in the weather, or maybe certain foods that have been indulged such as red wine or strong cheeses for some people. Any alcohol can bring on a migraine particularly upon over-indulgence but some people do not suffer after drinking vodka.
With sinus pain the headache or pain is more localized to the sinus areas. For example – the maxillary sinus will cause pain in the cheeks and the teeth can ache too. If on both sides of the nose between the eyes it is the ethmoid sinuses. Headaches caused by sinus problems are associated with nasal congestion and it can make a person feel sick. Pain in the roof of the orbit of the eys is a frontal sinus headache. The floor of the frontal sinus presses on the roof of the eye thus causing pressure and discomfort. On the other hand, the sphenoid sinus is at the back of the nose behind the throat and pain can be referred in any direction.
Other things to compare when assessing a migraine or sinus trouble are: – a throbbing headache that wakens you in the night is a migraine – pain that lasts for more than a day or two will most often be sinus trouble – the consumption of red wine is not related to sinus pain but can be the cause of a migraine – if you are suffering from a stuffy nose and yellow discharges then this is sinus trouble

The Role Of Long-Term In-Home Care For Alzheimer\’s Patients
February 9, 2010 by Jack Haddad
Caring for a family member inflicted with symptoms of Alzheimer\’s disease is both debilitating and a challenging task. Each day brings new demands as the caregiver copes with the rapid progression of the new patterns of behavior of the Alzheimer\’s patient.
In preparing and setting up an effective home care for an Alzheimer\’s patient, a compassionate caregiver must make the following changes in a new home environment:
1. As the disease progresses, adjusting your communication style to the patient\’s changing needs.
2. Scheduling visitors to avoid surprises and have something to look forward to. Even if the elder with dementia does not recognize those who visit, the contact is nonetheless valuable for them.
3. Establishing routines in activities of daily living. Be accepting of the increasingly limited capabilities of the person with dementia and implement care strategies accordingly. Do your best to be patient, kind, flexible, supportive, and calm. This disease is no one\’s fault, although it is very aggravating and disappointing.
By the same token, don\’t take problem behaviors (like aggressiveness or wandering) personally. Accept the symptoms of the disease and proceed from there. Remember that the person is not behaving this way on purpose.
Plan activities that the patient is interested in, such as art, cooking, walking, swimming, or gardening. Focus on enjoyment, not achievement. If the person is lucid enough, involve them in making music, doing puzzles or crosswords, or playing memory games, card or board games. Or, the patient may passively enjoy hearing music, contact with pets, or sitting outside in the garden.
Go for walks in the neighborhood, go for a drive, or spend time at a park. Walking is often therapeutic, although the pace may not be as vigorous as you might like. Develop a style of paying more attention to the beauty and novelty of your surroundings as you walk.
4. Maintaining social contacts and fun. During the early stage of the disease, caregivers can promote the patient\’s sense of well being by providing emotional support and by helping to maintain familiar activities and social contacts.
Even when Alzheimer\’s patients no longer have the cognitive ability to understand your humor, they can still appreciate it. They may still smile or laugh and sharing that laughter can be a relief to both you and your charge. Use the same modes of humor as you always have: teasing, nonsense, clowning. Be even more silly than usual!
To counteract isolation and loneliness, encourage family and friends to stay involved. Take the patient to family gatherings if it\’s comfortable to do so. Schedule visitors, to avoid surprises and have something to look forward to. Even if the elder with dementia does not recognize those who visit, the contact is nonetheless valuable for them.
Sometimes the caregiver will want to join the patient in family gatherings or stay in the home when visitors are present. Caregivers can start feeling isolated and lonely themselves as more and more of their time is built around the elder\’s needs. If the patient feels safe with the visitors, the caregiver can use the visiting time as an opportunity for relief and respite. Adult day care has similar benefits: social stimulation for the patient and free time for the caregiver.
5. Promote comfort and safety. As problems with memory and judgment increase, the patient becomes more vulnerable to accidents and injuries. There will be times when you\’ll want to remind the person that they have Alzheimer\’s. At other times it might be better to refer to a \”memory problem.\” Even if you repeatedly tell the elder that they have Alzheimer\’s disease, they may not remember that you told them. Be prepared to patiently repeat the information at times when you\’re trying to help the person understand why they can\’t do something or why you are taking over a task the person used to do.
Carefully screened and compassionate caregivers regard their responsibility as a way of being involved with their loved one. Their caring is based on unconditional love, and they do not consider it a burden. Dementia patients are able to read body language and to respond to the positive attitudes of the caregiver. Where patient and caregiver have had problems in their past relationship, it can be especially challenging to empathize and be kind, so a support system for the caregiver is most important.
6. Communicate with an Alzheimer\’s patient. A good home care service trains caregivers to acknowledge requests and respond to these patients. Don\’t argue or try to change the person\’s mind, even if you believe the request is irrational. Be affectionate with the patient, if this feels natural. Try not to set up a cycle of paying attention only when the person displays problem behaviors. Break this negative cycle by being supportive of positive behavior.
